There are a couple of important things to keep in mind when choosing a domain name for your web site.
1. Keep it as short as possible:
The shorter the domain the easier it is for people to remember.
2. Use keywords in your domain:
Instead of using just your business name as the domain name, try adding keywords that relate to what you offer. So if your business name was Acme Inc. and you sold hammers, instead of just registering acmeinc.com try registering acmeinc-hammers.com. This not only helps people get a better idea of what you offer but helps the search engines figure out what you're offering as well.
3. The Domain you want is already registered:
Consider using a domain name with an alternative extension. There are tons of good domain names still available with various extensions such as .info, .biz, .cc, .bz, .ws etc. These extensions work just as well as a .com and usually stand out more.
4. Register multiple domains: It is a good idea to register multiple extensions for your business. If you own the .com then make sure to register the .net also so that someone else doesn't take your name. This also helps when you expand and need to separate your site into different offerings.
